There are many forms of entertainment today that you will be surprised to know about. Movies are one of these sources of entertainment that almost every person on the planet loves. It’s a great stress-reliever and the perfect activity to do on your first date. It’s also a great way to spend your days off with friends and family. That’s why you see movie theatres are packed with people, especially when a movie they have been waiting for comes out. But sometimes, movie tickets can be expensive and the lines are long. That’s when people started using moviepass [2].

MoviePass used to be a  subscription-based ticketing service for people who love to watch movies in movie theatres. Even though it seems to be the best option for movie-lovers to save money, it has faced numerous backlash over the years since its inception. Learn more about MoviePass and how it works.

Get to Know MoviePass

MoviePass began in 200, and is a ticketing service for movies, but the best part about it is you only need to pay a monthly fee of about $29 to $34 a month. Once you are subscribed to MoviePass, you can watch movies at any movie theatre. But only one movie per day is allowed. This can save moviegoers a lot of money, instead of waiting in line and buying tickets. It saves them a lot of time too. It’s a great way to attract people into going to movie theatres but in a modernized way.

In its first test run in San Francisco, over 19,000 people subscribed to it. But local movie theatres claimed MoviePass didn’t want to speak with them, so they had to reject users. This is the start of one of the many problems MoviePass faced.

Where MoviePass Went Wrong

From 2014 to 2017, MoviePass and AMC created an alliance. But after it made changes that both boosted its popularity and created a lot of problems, AMC had to cut ties. They cut down prices from $29 to $34 a month, down to only $9.95 per month. In two days, over 150,000 new users signed up. In four months, new users grew to a million.

AMC claims the new pricing is unsustainable and unrealistic for the service that MoviePass offers. It even disappointed a lot of consumers down the road. After one year, users complained about the glitch in the platform, delayed shipping for user’s cards, and unpredictable changes in service. The parent company, Helios, lost over $20 million after the price cut. 2018 wasn’t better with a continuous string of disappointments. And in 2019, MoviePass had to shut down.

MoviePass was good while it lasted. With the idea of giving movie-lovers the entertainment they want. It all came down to poor decision-making. But all in all, MoviePass created a mark in the industry.
